We thought since Valentines Day is around the corner we would show you some beautiful red interiors. Red can be emotionally intense and it can be exciting. It can also make you hungry! Designer Adam Hunter has added enough red to make this breakfast nook interesting and adorable, but calm enough to be able to live with it. He used 7 different fabrics in this little nook. We love the color of red in small doses.

Not everyone can live with the color red. Because it is one intense color, it can make your heart beat faster. Julie put up a wallpaper in her kitchen with a lot of bright red in it. She took it down within six months. Even though she loves red she has learned what shade of red works and how much of it she can live with..

Designer Miles Reed created so much interest with different patterns and grounded it by adding black.
Did you know that bees can not see the color red? Red flowers are pollinated by birds, bats and butterflies, rather than bees. We thought we would just throw that info in!

Update on project and a look at fabric.

We wanted to show you some of the details we are adding to our design plan. We bought two wing back chairs that will be covered in a soft sage green by Robert Allen to go with A floral Ralph Lauren fabric. They are very similar to these. Kishani Perera used these in this design beautifully.

Here is another example from Ballard.

Lauren Liess from Pure style Home blog used them in the design house in Washington D.C. We also are using two different fabrics on them to give them more interest.

These are the beautiful fabrics we are using from Kravets and Robert Allen..OK so our photography is not the best here. The hubby was not home! We will show you more updates as we are moving along here...

An English design twist in Summerland Calif.

We never grow tired of this style.The English country style with these wonderful pillows that have an ethnic feel. This is a little store in Summerland California that portrays a Santa Barbra style.

Santa Barbra home style reflects the town's atmosphere, comfortable and relaxed. The ocean breezes and the laid back atmosphere reflects the style of design.

The soft colors of blues, a red almost pink tone and tangerine are so pretty.

Now it's Julie's turn to get caught in the picture of the mirror.

Notice the book in the back titled Chintz. We have not seen Chintz fabrics for a while. Maureen over at Eclectic revisited feels that English country Style is going to make a come back. .

We love the flare of India printed pillows and the old pine furniture from the 1800s. The old pine furniture is hard to find these days. It's a nice change from the grayed out furniture and still be on the lighter side. Do you think we are going to see English country style make a come back this year?

Designer Kishani Perera owner of Rummage, has a style of her own. Her stylish boutique is a delight to go see. It expresses her love of vintage with handmade items. She has a creative way of expressing herself and creating spaces that are chic and comfortable to live in. Notice how she balances the lighting and the chairs. She has naturally framed the room to create the balance it needed. Do you also notice the rug and the chair fabric? They both have a design that coordinates in shapes.

After talking to the photographer Jean Randazzo who photographed her work, you could tell that they worked well together. They have worked together for years. Kishani feels that Jean understands the mood that she is trying to create in each space and captures it in each image.

The color mix of orange with blue give each other that extra pop.

Kishani's heart and soul goes into each project and Jean is able to capture that feel. Being artists, we understand that. The design process is an intuitive experience. It does come from the soul. There are designers and there are artists. .Kishani is a true artist.

Jean captured Kishani's whimsical style. She has a way of mixing vintage with showroom pieces.
Her boutique expresses that and so does her new book that is coming out in April.

Perfect cozy reading nook with a warm glow created by using the varying shades of red.

Both comfortable and fun.

So soft and feminine, yet still elegant.

Kishani's new book shows the reader how to go through the design stages, from when to skimp and when to splurge. She helps the reader discover their own style. After observing her work, we are sure the pages will colorfully jump off the page with an expression that is all Kishani. The only way to describe her is classically chic!

Before pictures, What's up Dude!!

When our boys were young they use to have their own language or used a type of language that was from mars! You would here them on the phone telling their friends Hey dog, fly by the trap. Translation.....Come on over to our house.

We are up to no good.... Just kidding! We wanted to share with you a home that we are redesigning. We are repainting, reupholstering and adding new furniture. Hum...... When we say we, we don't actually mean us. No no no, You would never want us to paint your home. We are way too messy. We, as in our posse, our painters and our re-upholsterer.

New Kravets fabric for this sofa.

The wood details will be stripped and then stained darker.

Fabric cushion and pillows will be added to the window box.

We can't wait to redo the book shelves.

New rug, chairs, drapes, lamps and coffee table are in the planning. A lot of work! When it is done we will share the trap with you, but for now, thanks dogs for letting us be a part of your lives.

The colors and style of Paris

Bonjour!!! Danni went to Europe recently to visit her son at college in Rome. One of her daughters went along for the trip too. Of course they had to visit Paris, Florence and Venice on the way there. We thought we would share some photos starting with Paris. Not the usual tourist photos, except for one of the Eiffel Tower and the Seine just to get your bearings.

These colorful teapots were in Danni's favorite teashop Marriage Freres. They have several shops in Paris and in our humble opinion, have the best tea in the world.

Scarves are a necessity in Paris if you want to blend in and these made such a lovely display.

Great rug shop.

This was just one of so many amazing chocolate shop windows. Everything is sculptured or molded from chocolate. A shoe never looked or tasted so good.

Whimsical design choice. This guy was in our hotel lobby to greet us each day.

Would love to have this cement faux bois chair for the garden.

This chandelier is in our favorite bakery" Poilane" in St. Germaine. Can you believe it is made entirely of bread? They have to bake a new one every few years. The paintings are all of bread too.

Who doesn't love Hermes? Especially their scarves.

We waited in line just to get a pastry at Pierre Herme. It was worth it!

We had to giggle watching this little dog chasing the ubiquitous Paris pigeons to no avail.

We thought we would leave you with this longeriere shop window. Those are legs in different styles of hosiery under the umbrellas. Paris really does have the most creative and entertaining shop windows. Next on the trip was Florence. We will be posting photos from there soon. Au Revoir!!!

This is just darn right fun. Raw walls with a contemporary painting... It feels a little 1800s meets 1970 and runs into 2012! Very creative.

As we were posting images of Jeffers design group's work we were introduced to one of their photographers, Matthew Millman. We fell in love with his images. Clean, provocative and artistically done. So many times we see images that we feel should have been cropped differently to make for a better and more creative image, but Matthew's work was just beautiful!

Pantones Soft and Casual Color Palette...

We have some exciting things coming up, pictures of Danni's trip to Europe, Julie's daughter's wedding, two projects we will be sharing with you, but for now we will share with you another palette from Pantone. A calm ambiance that is tranquil and comforting with pinks,blues,soft whites, blending with taupe, grays and grape hues. With both of us having an art back ground we are always interested in the new colors selected for the new year. We believe everyone has a palette that they can live with, if it is" in "or not. Some new colors can be added to your own palette, but most people have an innate feel for colors that they can live with. The job of an interior designer is to stretch their clients to try new things. Tangerine interiors..a Beautiful color Palette...

We had a great Christmas and hope you did also. Julie's daughter's wedding plans are coming along and can't wait until the big day. Danni has loved having her son home, but she can't wait to be able to get her sleep again. You know how it is when kids come home from college and the odd hours they keep. You can't wait to see them and then can't wait for them to go back to school!

We are so excited for the new year. Some of the new predictions for 2012 that we might be seeing is a softer side, more feminine, with Brocade Damask and paisley patterns. When we think of feminine we think of French antiques, and a Baroque feel. We also think of Chintz, even though we haven't heard it mentioned, it has a very feminine feel. We are also hearing that we will be seeing more dark dramatic interiors, Twilight colors. One palette we will be seeing more of is tangerine, soft yellows, faded shades of rose, stone washed blues and grays with a soft touch of greens. Pantone named Tangerine the color of the year.

Christmas decor at our house...

We finally have pictures to show you. Julie's home decorated for Christmas.

With so much going on we both have been scrambling to get everything done. Danni just got back from visiting her son in Europe. There will be pictures soon from her trip we promise. Julie is planning her daughter's wedding that is in January. (It is hard talking for two people!) We both actually do write this blog. Julie starts it and Danni finishes it.

We work well this way. We complement each other. We are both blondes and tease each other that it takes two of us to accomplish the things that we do. We are joking, Really Really!

We have been crazy busy. We wish we had time to go see this year's showcase at the Greystone mansion. Barclay Butera is one of many designers involved with Maison De Luxe design house. The showcase design house is at the Greystone Mansion in Los Angeles California. He designed the family room with rich fabrics and a sophisticated cozy feel. We love how he added the blue and white jars in the bookcase. He created so much interest with layering objects, from the mirror and paintings to the interesting tchotchkes on the table. The wall paper is from Cole and Sons, Malabar in stone.

The fabulous chairs are from Kravets along with the beautiful fabrics for the pillows. The striped rug brings everything together. Notice the wonderful blue and white jar! The tray on the ottoman brings in that lived in feel, but still has an up-scale look.

Love these chairs! The sofa and fabrics are also from Kravets.

Are those animal print chairs fantastic or what! Love.....

This would be so smart on our dog, Sway. Anyone would be so proud to walk a dog in this hot little number! If it were cold enough in California to put a coat on a dog.

Madeline Stuart, A good Designer has a Sense of Balance and Color.

Madeline Stuart is a L.A, California based designer. She has a timeless approach to design.

She has a sense of balance and a keen eye for color. Look at the patterns in the rug and how well she coordinated them with the pillows. The navy pillows on the sofa create a perfectly balanced background for the pillows in front of them. Every well designed room tells a story with patterns and color.

Here she has added a little color around the room so it has a soft and balanced feel. If she would have added just one blue pillow it would have looked out of place. By adding a couple of blue pillows on the ends of the sofas, it now works. Sometimes the simple secret is not too much and not too little.

The antique sconce and the beautiful details in the fireplace mimic the design in the hand painted border. A good designer or artist will follow through with coordinating their project by adding similar details. It is barely noticeable so it does not become excessive or too busy.

Look how well she coordinated the stripes and plaids. At first you might not notice how important they are in making this room work, but they really do make this room! A well designed room bounces the eye around the room where the designer has created interest and writes you a story through that design. What does this room tell you?

Have you ever thought about how a room tells a story? Like a painting, every eye might see a different story or they might have a different idea about how the artist created his master piece. The room as well as a great painting can evoke a myriad of feelings. When you are looking for items for your home, what story do you want your room to tell?

Shopping at the Agoura antique mart and A Beautiful Mess.

The Agoura Antique mall is always beautiful at Christmas time. They have an artistic way of displaying items. Every time we go in there it is a treat! We also went into A Beautiful Mess, which is also just as creative with their displays. It is a great place to spend the day and have lunch at the little cafes nearby. We hope you enjoy some eye candy and wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving.

We love old black and white movies. They are classic, like Katherine Hepburn dressed so beautifully in Raising Baby. Could she be talking to Cary Grant? Notice the French bench in the back ground. This could fit right into a room designed for today.

When we saw these pictures we fell in love with the look of the patina style. The old worn wood and stone walls are part of the charm. We love the old barn style architecture and the elegant french feel. Look how the designer added the sophisticated ottoman coffee table. Did you notice the baskets on the walls in the kitchen? In the early 80s when we were broke and young, we would use baskets to decorate the walls. It was a cheap way to give our homes a designer look! At least we thought so. Maybe if they were antique french baskets it would have looked great, like the ones on the walls of this grand and magnificent room. Have you seen a come back of baskets hanging on walls? We were just wondering what you thought about that look!

Have you noticed bigger and bolder wallpapers? We have and it screams fun! Designer, Katheryn Ireland is known for fun . She has a talent for mixing patterns.

How could you ever be in a bad mood with this dinning room! The colors would create an appetite, not a good idea for a kitchen. We would all gain 20 pounds, but it would be great for a dinning room. It creates a mood. Company would feel at home and your food would look yummy!

We love a mix of old and new. We feel it creates interest in any room and style. For us, there is a comfort to this style. My daughter is getting married in January. As she is getting ready for a new season in her life, so am I. Looking throughout my home and remembering the things that were passed down from generation to generation. My grandmothers china, silver, and the old furs that are in the closet. As we reflect back on the seasons in our life, the most important thing to us is our love of family and friends.

This dinning room has a flare of old and new.
Its white washed brick gives the room character. The chandelier is contemporary with a hint of tradition.

As my daughter is entering this new season, leaving behind an old life and embarking on her new future, families will be blending together and new traditions will be created.

A romantic chandelier with a touch of blue. The bride wears a touch of blue to represent fidelity and loyalty.

Something new represents their hope for the future.

As the new couple collects treasures to build their new life, they will discover their own style.... a collection of new and old traditions.

New, old, something blue and something borrowed. There is something comforting about tradition. Danni and I have many traditions that we have passed down to our children. Is there a tradition that your family has passed down that you hold close to your heart? Or is there a new tradition that you will pass down to your children? We would love to hear about them.

Malibu Colony Company

If any of you have visited Malibu California, you would know, that it is home to many stars. You never know when your going to see someone famous.

We stopped by a cute store called Malibu Colony to get some ideas for clients. Isn't this a clever idea? The Malibu Colony has trendy, beachy things that are unique and fun.

Wouldn't this be perfect for a beach house?

We love this table.

We love this chair with a natural linen fabric.

They had some fun shell chandeliers. Did you notice the shells are shaped like butterflies?	.

David Phoenix, Does California have its own style?

We fell in love with one of California's designers, David Phoenix. He has been a designer for 20 years. House Beautiful recognized his talent, and awarded him the title of one of America’s Top Young Designers. Do you think California has its own style?

We are in love with this room he designed. Cozy and comfortable. The soft colors of the fabric softens the stone wall. Can't you see your self by the fire, with a cup of coffee and 2 pieces of chocolate!

He has a versatile and sophisticated style.

Look how he successfully, coordinates the fabric on the pillows and the drapes. He uses a floral, stripes, a geometric, and the Greek key pattern .We also like how he used the coral on the table.

Love the white, painted wood walls and the soft beige fabrics. Just a hint of blue in the books. In this setting that little bit of blue is strong.

Casual but formal. Like a pair of jeans, with a dressy shirt and diamond earrings.

Are we ever going to get sick of white kitchens and marble? Love!

We love how Kristen Panitch mixes colors. As though she was painting with oils, mixing the brush strokes to create this casual, lay- ed back feel. It has the colors of an ocean, at sunset!

Here are some things you might not of known about Julie and Danni

Oh dear, 7 things about us!
There are two of us!
Danni and I have been friends since we were in college.
We have never had a fight or have argued about anything. We are the dearest of friends and can say we are sisters. Someone forgot to tell our mothers that there was a mix up! No, we are not telling how old we are.

We both have 3 children. Danni has two daughters and a son.
Julie has two sons and a daughter.
We are both artists and have sold our paintings. We will show you them one day.
Danni paints beautiful landscapes and flowers. She also teaches art in her home. Julie paints people and flowers.

We are both married to artistic husbands.
Danni's husband is a writer and a director. He is most famous for producing and writing on the show
" Buffy The Vampire Slayer". Danni has read many scripts and has helped to edit them.
Julies hubby is the photographer we posted about his studio.
She also paints his portraits.

Julie, loves to cook and gets together with a friend( April) once a month and they try new recipes.
Her fave thing to do. Julia, eat your heart out!
She is a fabric whore, that's what her mother calls her.
She has 2 dark Chocolate Reeeses every morning with her coffee.

Danni, loves to knit and makes awesome sweaters.
She also loves to garden. Her garden is amazing.
She also is going to Europe to visit her son who is there going to college.
Poor Danni, has to go all the way to Rome to see her son. Don't you feel sorry for her!

The New Country Kitchen...Meets Industrial.

This feels like a farm kitchen, but look at the windows, contemporary, and a little industrial. Did you notice the hood over the oven? This designer has successfully balanced a mix of antiques and industrial styles together to create a very interesting and pleasing room.( Steven Gambrel.)

A wonderful renovation with a fantastic view.

We wanted to show you this home we worked on. The home was completely renovated including gutting the kitchen. We added maple cabinets and granite. Sorry, we don't have before pictures of the kitchen... but it had dark oak cabinets with an upper and lower row that cut the rooms in half. It now flows right into the family room.

The renovations took about 11 months. It has a double wide door Sub Zero refrigerator / freezer . Drawer fridges and an extra sink in the island. Then there are the double wall ovens and range by Wolf . Wouldn't that be a dream?

This was the before picture of the master bedroom. It was very dark and out dated.

We added a window seat with beautiful pillows and drapery.

This was the back yard before landscaping. It had 3 different levels. When the pool was put in, the dirt was used to grade the yard. Creating one big level area with the step down deck.

The view is gorgeous. You could see the ocean.

It started out as an old fashioned Tudor with dark wood and dark paint in all the rooms.

There was a room added above the garage. Then it was lightened up inside and out while keeping it's classic Tudor origins. We would love to hear about your experiences with renovations.

Sarah and Ky's Succulants and Herbs Wedding shower.

Everything looked so beautiful. They used all natural elements. We even thought it would be fun to do something similar for the holidays. Just change out the ribbon to a plaid.


Sarah and Ky have known each other since they were in 4th grade. They were in the same car pool. Who could of guessed that these two little kids would have grown up and gotten married.


The tables were gorgeous. The bright apple green and earthy browns were beautiful together. The mix of succulents and herbs were charming.

There is nothing like young love

This is Sarah on the right, with Danni, her maid of honor.

What a blessing it was to be with so many close friends and family.

This was a vintage chair that we had picked up for 10 dollars and had it recovered in a vintage crewel bed spread. Can not wait to see it in Sarah's little flat.( The picture below is the before picture.)

Barn doors, mattresses OH MY- We were meant to be born in a barn!

Have you noticed lately how many barn doors you are seeing? Maybe it is just us, but we are loving the door! The doors that Martin Lawrence Bullard used in the Osbournes home are amazing. They look more like a piece of art than a door.

In this kitchen the designer uses the doors to cover up a pantry.

Kelly from Polished Pebbles blog found these old doors and turned them into the barn door look. She gives some helpful hints on what kind of hinges work best.

Designer Sherry Hart used barn doors behind a crib in this babies room.. So creative.

Over at Nucheys mommy Blog, she creatively shows you how to do this yourself.

We have also been noticing the mattress sofa look? OK, so not so much of a barn!. Designed by S.R. Gambrel

Here designer S.R.Gambrel used it to create more of a retro look. We remember the coffee table from the 70's.
